Both sides will look to get their campaign started on a high, in their quest for World Cup glory in the Super 12 Group B stage.

Over the years, the two teams have given many high-octane clashes at the world level where India held an edge but Babar Azam's performance helped Pakistan to bounce back brilliantly in the last edition of the league. They demonstrated a near-perfect performance in Dubai to clinch their first-ever victory against India in a World Cup. The Indian team which is captained by Rohit Sharma will now be eager to come up with more power and assert their dominance in front of Pakistan.

As the world is waiting with bated breath, Melbourne is all set to host 100,000 spectators for the league. Let's have a look at the India vs Pakistan clash in previous matches of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.

  • Durban, 2007

The 2007 edition of the T20 World Cup was the inaugural season of the ICC-led cricket series. It was the first-ever encounter between India & Pakistan in T20 World Cup history that turned out to be a great battle as the match between the two went right down to the wire. In the cricket matches, the half-century by Robyn Uthappa and crucial contributions by MS Dhoni and Irfan Pathan down the order, helped India to get a total of 141/9.

In the augural tournament, Pakistan could have bagged the chances to chase the target down but the Indian bowlers stood tough to pick up early wickets of the Pakistani players. Even though Misbah-ul-Haq threatened India and took the match away from them with a 50. With a hold on the nerves of the Indian team, the match ended in a draw. Eventually, the India squad was declared the winners after they won the bowl-out; it is a system which was used to break ties in the format in the beginning days.

  • Johannesburg, 2007

The arch-rivals India and Pakistan locked horns once again in the same edition of the T20 World Cup in the finals. The matches turned out to be quite spectacular for the cricket enthusiasts as they fought right until the last over once again. Gautam Gambhir depicted a magnificent knock of 75 at the top of the order while Rohit Sharma gave an unbeaten cameo of 30 that helped India pose a challenging target of 158 for Pakistan.

The Pakistani batter, Imran Nazir got off to a wonderful start with a score of 33 in 14 balls but the regular fall of the wickets at regular intervals after his run-out was quite saddening for the Pakistan squad.

Misbah-ul-Haq barely kept his team afloat in the match, taking it down to the last over with Pakistan needing 13 runs for winning & India in the need of a wicket. The Indian team was under pressure when he hit a six off the second delivery of the last over by Joginder Sharma but he miscued a scoop off the very next delivery and was caught out easily by Sreesanth at short fine-leg. That was the last wicket and Pakistanis were bowled out and India emerged as the champion in the inaugural T20 World Cup.

  • Colombo, 2012

In 2012, India and Pakistan met again in the group stages. The 2012 edition was a one-sided encounter in which Pakistan got bowled out for a total of 128 with Lakshmipathy Balaji registering his bowling figures of 3/22. Ravichandran Ashwin & Yuvraj Singh gave brilliant deliveries and cumulatively, they claimed a couple of wickets each. Even though India lost its early wicket of Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli contributed with an unbeaten knock of 78 off just 61 deliveries. Eventually, India got victory the match by 8 wickets and 18 deliveries to spare in that edition.

  • Dhaka, 2014

In the 2014 edition, the matches during the group stages again turned out to be a one-sided affair in which India managed to restrict Pakistan at a total of 130/7. Amit Mishra gave wonderful throws with his wrist spin, getting the figures of 2/22 in 4 overs. Again in this match, India chased down the target comfortably with Kohli and Raina remaining unbeaten on 36 & 35 respectively. Shikhar Dhawan and Sharma also contributed well for team India with 30 and 24 at the top of the order. India won by 7 wickets with 9 deliveries remaining.

  • Kolkata, 2016

In the shortened game of 18 overs for each side in the 2016 edition, India got the victory once again. In that edition, rain impeded the gameplay to shorten it. The Pakistani squad could only manage to score a total of 118/5 as the Indian bowlers bowled tightly and lengths throughout the innings. In response, in the early matches, India lost both the openers but Virat Kohli did wonders again as he remained unbeaten on 55 in just 37 deliveries, bagging 6 wickets for India with the remaining 13 balls.

  • Dubai, 2021

In the 2021 edition, Pakistanis broke their losing streak in the ICC Men’s World Cup against India by registering a 10-wicket victory during the group stage encounter in Dubai.

After a tough start brought in by Shaheen Shah Afridi’s new ball spell, he claimed the wicket of both KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. Kohli’s fifty and Pant's valuable contribution of 39 runs India to get a total of 151/7.

However, the openers of Pakistan, Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan gave some magnificent performances with their bat and remained unbeaten on 68 & 79 respectively for following the target with 13 balls remaining.
