Mirabai Chanu Gold Medal: Early life, Weightlifting career, Awards and Achievements

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who was born to Mr. Saikhom Kriti Meitei and Mrs. Saikhom Ongbi Tombi Leima, is the first Indian woman to win a gold medal in weightlifting at the CommonWealth Games 2022. She is a weightlifter from India, and she was born in Manipur’s Nongpok Kakching. This well-known weightlifter practices Sanamahism and worships Hindu gods.

When she won her first gold medal in a local weightlifting competition, she was just 11 years old. She once competed in the 48 and 49 kg weight classes. She traveled to participate and win medals at the Asian and World Junior Championships. At the Manipur Sports Academy, she used to train on her own.

On August 8, 1994, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, also known as Mirabai Chanu, was born. She spent her childhood living within a 30-kilometer area of the city of Manipur. Chanu is an Indian weightlifter who competes for his country. From the age of 12, she had the power and capacity to lift big objects. She used to be able to handle big stacks of firewood that even her brothers couldn’t do when she was that little. Additionally, when she was 17 years old, she won a gold medal at the International Youth Championship, which was her biggest triumph.

One of her most notable and well-known accomplishments was winning a gold medal in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, California. She received numerous honors in the weightlifting community. Chanu bought a silver medal in the Women’s 49 kg division at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She began participating in athletics at the age of 12—interestingly.

Her brother first noticed her lugging a large, hefty, and difficult-to-pick load of firewood before she had started on her trek. When she was 12 years old, her family encouraged her weightlifting skills and enrolled her in a sports academy.

She always had a passion for archery and wanted to learn more about it before pursuing weightlifting. She began amassing national and international medals quite early on after deciding on this field.

Personal life of Mirabai Chanu 

One of the younger siblings in the family is Mirabai Chanu. She is one of five sisters and brothers. Chanu was born into a family that was struggling to make ends meet. Her mother, Saikhom Tombi Devi, managed a tiny tea and snack business in the village, while her father, Saikhom Kriti Meitei, worked as a construction worker for the government.

She comes from a Meitei family. She is one of five siblings. This includes two girls named Saikhom Rangita and Saikhom Shaya and a brother named Saikhom Sanatomba Meitei. Chanu enjoys traveling and listening to music.

Weightlifting Career of Mirabai Chanu Gold winner

Mirabai gold winner, began her career in the women’s 48 kg division in 2014 and was successful in taking home a silver medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Saikhom qualified for the women’s 48 kg division of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. She was unable to properly complete the event, though. She lifted 194 kg with a combination of an 85 kg snatch and a 109 kg clean and jerk to win the gold medal in the same category. The 2017 edition of this world weightlifting competition took place in Anaheim, California.

She participated in the Commonwealth Games after a one-year layoff and won India’s “First Gold Medal” in 2018. In addition, Mirabai shattered all prior records by snatching and clean-and-jerking 196 kg, a total of 86 kg and 110 kg, respectively.

She took home the gold medal in the women’s weightlifting division at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, California, USA. She set a record by squatting 109 kg clean and totaling 194 kg. She won a second bronze medal at the 2020 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent in April 2021. She lifted 202 kg to come second in the 49 kg division and win a silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. After Karnam Malleshwari, she was the first weightlifter from India to win an Olympic silver medal.

Mirabai Chanu Won Gold and other Several Achievements

The Indian government and the state government honored Mirabai Chanu with major honors when she won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She has earned numerous awards from privately held businesses like Byju’s in addition to those from the government. She received one crore from Byju’s, one crore from the Manipurian government, two crores from the Ministry of Railways, and Chanu received a gift of fifty lakh rupees from the Indian government.

The Indian Olympic Association’s section donated 40 lakh, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India gave 50 lakh. Along with this, the Manipur government awarded Mirabai 35 lakh for competing and earning a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Mirabai Chanu Wins Gold: Performance at 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, have provided participants with a great platform to display their abilities. Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg, including clean and jerk, to win the gold medal in the 49 kg division.
